Huh? How would you do that? Treating a number as base 8 that is obviously (at least) base 10?

they are if you have no clue what they could mean with all these NULL bytes and the other non-ascii

The hints given here are too obscure. Probably I'm not seeing the important thing is this challenge. I've tried conversions from Dec to Oct and vice-versa; however, I still see nothing

Yes, it's not as obvious as being told to convert from base X to Y. Like most of the crypto challenges, the point is to figure out the encoding. Specific hints would just spoil it, I think.

Okay, I'm really stuck here. I got a 7 digit answer and it's plain text, except the last character. But it doesn't seem to be correct, where could be my mistake? Obviously there's a solution, why is my last digit not alphanumeric?

There are three or four known cases in the "Didactic" challenges where the last character of an answer is not encoded correctly. It might be that this applies here too.

No, the challenge is perfectly good.

@kain: With six out of seven characters you can make an educated guess about the last character.
You're either missing a twist of the cipher scheme or you have an error in your implementation...

Certainly an interesting question, first one I've met where I have had literally no ideas on how to decrypt it. Figured I should check on the forums but apparently you guys just confuse me more
