I'm Confused :(

Post by 0.Dark.Thought »

I don't get it. If hackers are supposed to write freeware/free software, then how will we make money? I notice that other users like White Knight talk about selling software, or making money off of programming. Doesn't that contradict itself? If I am wrong please say and help me understand exactly what it means to serve the Hackerdom.

Well there are different ways to earn money from making software and its policy. It doesn't necessary always be open source or free software, because it can be abused. And no it doesn't contradict itself, you just do a project and finish it and move on to the next one in the company.

Freeware == bad
Free software == good

The good thing to do is to write programs where the users have access to the code. It's perfectly reasonable to charge money for copies of the binaries, though.

Consider Red Hat.

Make free software open source and all that jazz but host it on your own website and have a small advertisement section.

Or create very good programs and ask for donations/charge for premium version.

I don't know, that practice has always seemed rather shady to me.

You can always sell service.
