Just thought I'd mention this.
Just thought I'd mention this.
Now, I'm no impressive hacker, so I don't feel like I have much license to speak, but I will mention that the grammar among "hackers," at least on these forums, seems pretty poor.
However, it does seem like the most competent or "rounded" hackers do have better grammar; it's just a generalization.

You have stumbled upon an interesting trend.pixelot wrote:Now, I'm no impressive hacker, so I don't feel like I have much license to speak, but I will mention that the grammar among "hackers," at least on these forums, seems pretty poor.

And it's certain that "crackers" rarely take time to articulate and communicate. To real "hackers," of course, these properties are essential.

Check out this quote from http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html#attitude:
Being a native English-speaker does not guarantee that you have language skills good enough to function as a hacker. If your writing is semi-literate, ungrammatical, and riddled with misspellings, many hackers (including myself) will tend to ignore you. While sloppy writing does not invariably mean sloppy thinking, we've generally found the correlation to be strong — and we have no use for sloppy thinkers. If you can't yet write competently, learn to.

Oh yeah. ESR is most certainly the authority on the subject.pixelot wrote:And it's certain that "crackers" rarely take time to articulate and communicate. To real "hackers," of course, these properties are essential.

I completely agreed with Grand_Master. But flexibility is needed since they have the right to free speech even though it isn't in correct grammar and spelling. Otherwise this forum would become a English classroom.Grand_Master wrote:I agree.. The spelling and grammar of this forum is horrible.
I can accept this, in cases people don't use native english.
All this wannbe slang is pretty disturbing, though.
If I have difficulty understanding them then I have difficulty helping them. And this forum isn't an English classroom.WhiteKnight wrote:I completely agreed with Grand_Master. I respect your ideal, but how you define if they're lacking English?canine wrote:If I have difficulty understanding them then I have difficulty helping them. Uhh, frequently butchering the language in a way that makes understanding it difficult. So some occasional mistakes here and there are slightly annoying, but forgiveable.WhiteKnight wrote:I respect your ideal, but how you define if they're lacking English?canine wrote:If I have difficulty understanding them then I have difficulty helping them. When I spend more time deciphering what ther person wrote, than on the content of their question, there is a serious problem.
Also, NEVER criticize someone else's writing unless yours is flawless. Unless it is indecipherable, as noted previously. In that case you can gently ask for a clarification.
I also agree.
