Actually what I meant was I just opened the file and got the answer straight away without doing anything so I was wondering if it was just me or if it was kind of useless challenge

...or a decent editor.

I believe Xeye is correct... it seems like an archaic format that no one really supports.

the format should be the challenge, the challenge name gives a hint (.sgi is a graphic format from silicon graphics inc.)

Indeed, what is the point? For Ubuntu users the "challenge" consists in being able to read - and to realise there is indeed no other challenge. Well, this may be fair insofar as there are other challenges like "Compression" which require the use of software not easily available under Linux. But I really would prefer challenges whose difficulty doesn't depend on your OS.

The point is that a certain OS can make a challenge easier, but you can still do it under any OS. If you really want to make the most of a challenge, write a program to read the format! They're pretty well balanced between Mac OS and Linux as well - Compression was sooo easy under Mac Os.

It's easy on OS X too:

Code: Select all

convert someimage.sgi someimage.png
open someimage.png
