The compression challenge requires you to buy a $30 piece of software to solve. I just think that this is a little unfair

It's even worse when your work computer has vista and 75% of the free programs don't run on vista... but I still figured it out

I'm only having trouble with the .sitx I could have handled .sit, but not .sitx

well the buyware that is under question was a defacto for me a few yrs ago for compression.

and ya it has two versions personal free download and professional buyware tool

left it for Rapid Application Resource (:-))......................

and this chalange brought my old days back, but you need that only for hqx and sitx for rest my current compression tool is enough........

I've just completed it under Linux (Ubuntu). The StuffIt part is definitely the hardest -- I ended up downloading a free StuffIt trial package for Windows and installing it under Wine.

All the rest of the required tools are either already there in a reasonable default GNU/Linux installation or can be pulled easily out of the distribution repository.

At least I can be sure that I won't be missing any decompression tool now that I've done this challenge ;-)

i did it on windows too but still it took quite some time to find the tool you need

You should really switch it from sitx to an older version of the format. Preferably one old enough that I can do it in an emulator running an old version of Mac OS.

I've had too many bad experiences with the pile of shit to be willing to let it anywhere near my computer.

The sitx was realy hard to go.
Ask a friend who has a mac, they all seem to have stuffIt.
I asked my sister who is working as a designer.
She was very suprised what happend as the result but it was realy easy to her.

ok this is the most stupid challenge by far. you need to install 10 crappy programs that will be used just once.

No, you don't. At the very most you need to download two programs (on a Windows machine), and since it is very unlikely that you don't have any unpacker at all on your computer, you can probably get away with just ONE download. For some file formats, there are also online tools to convert/unpack them - no need to download anything in that case.
