hacking is the act of infiltrating an object..authorized or not. for you to figure out in what direction someone is talking about..you can use context clues like you did. "cracking" was just created because the ethical hackers wanted to stop being framed...i'm sorry but its never going to happen lol

In my opinion it's not very mature and appropriate to react *that* aggressive to crackers.
What should it be good for, asides from wasting your time and energy?

You can't even blame those people to misunterstand what this whole site is about, it's just the countless reporters and authors who were unable to difference between "hacker" and "cracker" and threw it in the same pot in the last few decades. And to keep it in perspective, there's nothing wrong with wanting to know how to find out a password of an EMail account. It just depends on what you do with your knowledge, what your intention is if a person is hacker or cracker.

So, I think posting a link like that: http://catb.org/esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html would be ten times more effective than immediately ranting around and getting mad at him like a ten year old, don't you think?
Everybody should get a chance - it's just really scary how much people here on the net think they are so superior so others and try to push their ego with hatred posts. That only amplifies the stereotype that most computer scientists highly skilled in one area of their life and lack in social skills immensely.

using hacker for both ethical and malicious is the literal correct way
using cracker for malicious is the "jargon" or "slang" that has been adapted..however only hackers use the word cracker...it was established in 1985 and hackers are still framed just as much..if not more..so what was the point in the first place
and even regardless..we all learn from the same place..the same stuff..just use it a different way, we are doing the same thing..thus we are all hackers regardless of motive

and even more! there are a group of people that crack software in which is normally paid for. those should be given the name crackers. hence they "crack the code"
