I just extracted the ASCII-string and opened the png (looking forward to find the password). I was a bit disappointed to see that greenish thing with white speckles. Is there any hint if this is another stage of encoding, or is this an error?

I was really hoping we wouldn't actually have to extract the string from the pic. Oh well

Then either I made some mistake or this is some strange encoding... I got some plaintext at the start and then a pile of mess.

Have got the greenish speckles and from there the plain text, did as the last sentence told me (twice!!), but my answers still got rejected... I can feel tog's pain!

Not really. Once you have the plain text, it should be straight forward.
