The base of cracking and hacking are basically the same, general knowledge of computer systems

creativity and hardware is important too

Sure, but that's like saying that tennis and beating up people require similar skills. Sure, they probably do, but that's irrelevant. Cracking is a waste of time. There are much more interesting things one could be doing.
And hardware is only of marginal importance.
