well, i got past the login and was thrilling none the less, lol. im not really sure what you said, but im going to get that book and read it. hopefully it will help me understand

ok. i got through some of the book. but it jumped from simplistic to advanced really fast, i think i need some more programming and hardware knowledge before i persue anymore. unless anyone can teach me about ports. lol. they tend to be important from what ive read

Here is the Wikipedia description of sockets and here appears to be a thorough tutorial about sockets on linux, it's not much different on windows except it's with Winsock2.h instead of sys/socket.h but I think MinGW covers that detail up for you if you use it.
