one more thing that came into mind..
1024*768 still exists, and even if you make a more liquid layout, the left and right columns are rather large.. There won't be enough space left to show off the banner..
One site I find rather handy when designing sites is http://browsershots.org, although you might have to wait over an hour for some shots.
