Does anyone know why hacker keeps crashing, i think it is because tons of people keep solving challenges and that just overloads the poor ranking system?

While I don't really have any statistics, I have my doubts that there are really "tons" of people logged in all around the clock, hammering the server and bringing it to its knees.
If it is any indication, look at the forum activity - it's pretty low actually. Or the velocity with which the number of people increases who have solved a certain challenge - that ain't sky high, either:
"Didactic Byte" was solved by 7873 people in about 4 years. The number of users who visit this website on average per day quite certainly is much smaller than that.
In one point I totally have to agree with you though: You used the right adjective to describe the ranking system.
